The foraging area is thick acrylic boxed area with a layer of comfortable pH balanced plaster as flooring. The plaster mimics natural hard soil.
The plaster used is pH balanced and non toxic. The color of the plaster will change depending on humidity. Plaster is used because it mimics natural hard soil, can retain and spread moisture without losing its shape / get soft.
Since the water reservoir in this nest is hidden under a layer of plaster, carefully drop 1-2 mL of water at a time and watch the plaster. If it is wet, the color will be slightly darker.
A good rule of thumb is about 2 mL per week, but this depends on the humidity in your home and where you place the farm.
Humidity is important for ants because, higher humidity is more comfortable for ants and encourages queens to lay eggs.
The base is 3D printed using PLA.
