This gorgeous 56 T-bird was purchased from RM Auctions in 2006 and has seen just over 100 miles since. The vehicle remained in a climate controlled garage in Indiana. We picked up and trailered the vehicle to The Car Vault for inspection and to see she was brought up to date on several service items. We then had the vehicle detailed and were surprised how well she cleaned up! The paint shows its age, but is in great condition as is the hard top. Brightwork shows no signs of pitting and chrome is in great condition. We were tickled when the soft top appeared and is also in great condition with light staining. The rear vinyl window also shows well without any crease marks and is quite clear. The interior shows extremely well with minimal wear the bolsters and front fascia is clean and well kept. We had the engine steam cleaned and it's definitely worth a look. The undercarriage shows some light surface rust on the frame, but could be cleaned up. The rear diff has some build up, but could also be cleaned up . Overall, it shows like a well kept 81k mile T-bird. This is a really nice driver and presents itself with high regard.
A copy of the original build sheet is included with the sale and shows it was originally sold to CY Owens Inc in Pontiac, MI on June 11, 1956.

1956 Ford Thunderbird highlights...
In 1953, Chevrolet shocked the world with their new sports car, the Corvette. Within a month of the unveiling, Ford began working on a response to their Detroit competitor. By late 1954, the blue oval was ready to show the world what they had come up with. Enter the Thunderbird, a 2-door open top “personal car” with a small block V8 and an endless amount of sporty abilities. While the new creation shared many design cues from other Ford products, nothing else in the lineup was nearly as sleek, sharp, or fast. Even though Ford sold the car initially as more of a luxury and comfort cruiser, the 292 Cubic inch V8 drop top was no mockingbird. Chevrolet’s fiberglass creation was faster than the “T-Bird’, the sales results were the exact opposite. Corvette sold 700 total Corvettes in 1955 while Ford pumped out over 16,000 Thunderbirds in its first year, an absolutely smashing result.
For 1956, Ford added on to an already attractive package to keep their lead on the bowtie. An optional 312 V8 was offered along with the iconic “port-hole” windows in the fiberglass removable hardtop. This helped Ford maintain a large lead over Chevy as 15,631 Thunderbirds were made compared to the improved by still lackluster 3,467 total Corvette’s. The introduction of the 312 V8 was crucial for the T-Bird, providing enough horsepower and torque to stay in the ballpark of Corvette. However, the head-to-head battle with Corvette would only continue for 1 more year, as the Bird grew significantly in 1958. These early first-generation T-Bird’s encompass unique traits that only a few cars in American history possess. The symphonic blend of sports car, luxury car, and boulevard cruiser was perfectly exhibited from 1955-1957, but was never truly repeated for the rest of the model’s history. Topping off the two-seater’s character and charm would be the distinct 1950’s combination of Fiesta Red paint, wide white-wall tires, and chrome galore.
